Its better to have at least one set that helps survival, even at the cost of dps. Other than that a maxed out healer companion can be really good in almost every fight. In either case, the tank needs to hug boss or everyone dies, and the indicator is orange without the ability to be changed. It's barely visible in the fight where everything is bright orange.
