As the name suggests it adds a spherical influence, if the selected verts lay flat on a plane the result is circular. Another option is an addon called LoopTools. Webadd a cylinder go to edit mode delete caps select an edge, press W → mark seam press A press U → unwrap create a texture with your image (use UV as input for the image texture node).
